Bejart: Around the World in 80 Minutes

Maurice Bejart’s ballet based upon Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days was a very exciting, energetic and vibrant affair with engaging music. Even with a vague narrative.

I could not help but be puzzled by the narrative at play throughout the sequences. A young man is the primary character in every sequences with an antagonistic man in black continuing to obstruct him in a psychological manner. Possibly it is my ignorance but the vagueness in narrative left Around the World in 80 Minutes inches away from brilliance.

Though it may be minimal in narrative as it was in staging from the elaborate expectations I had beforehand, this was by no means a flaw as every dancer had a chance conveyed masterly crafted dancing with great physical energy to alluring proportions. Their choreography was superb and contained varied styles without losing qualities that made Around the World in 80 Minutes enchanting viewing.
